In this paper, the author offers his thoughts concerning why musicians are increasingly using recorded sounds in their work. He presents a brief, succinct history of sound recording, including a discussion concerning the shift from musical reproduction via oral tradition to media-based performance reproduction. In conclusion, he calls for new performance tools that enable the dynamic use of pre-recorded music, he offers a few examples of such tools.
