In this chapter ,the author offers an overview of the recent history of music technology. He discusses the effects of the commercialisation of music technology, and describes and comments on the differences between what he calls ‘traditionalist' and ‘revisionist' approaches to technology. He argues that in order to learn about music technology one must overcome the traditionalist injunctions against doing it and the formidable task of using advanced technologies in creative ways. He proposes four necessary conditions that must be met by any path leading to an artistically expressive technology.
