In this article, the authors discuss the differences between two basic models of how a performer interacts with electronics in a performance situation: 1) the tape music model, which adds performers to a tape of recorded sound, where the performer is slave to the electronics, and 2) the keyboard electronic music model, where a pianist performs on a keyboard synthesiser and so the electronics are slave to the performer. Noting that these two models are the end points of a continuum, the authors explore the region in between through the context of a work titled Wildlife, in which two of the authors perform on two new instruments, the Radio Drum and the MIDI violin, whilst two computers extend the performance.
