In this article the authors examine the problems associated with the notion of the computer as musical instrument and the prospects for their solution. It includes a discussion on the principal goals and requirements for computer-based musical instruments and the variety of metaphors for musical control that the authors have found to be powerful. Finally, it presents some of the technology that the authors have developed for implementing these instruments.
