In this paper, the author discusses the theoretical background that underlies the design of the ixi software system, a series of fifteen screen-based virtual interfaces for musical performance on computers. Likening the design of such interfaces to that of creating a semiotic system, the author presents the terminology of ixi's semantics - a language that suggests to the musician what the functionality of each interface element is, and what it signifies in a musical context.
