In this paper, the authors present the motivations behind and the results of an empirical study of creative compositional processes, one that looks towards improving composition software. The study utilised a qualitative methodology which included multi-angle observation, interviews, and the study of artifacts produced by composers in a natural setting, using their own familiar software and hardware environments.
