In this article, the author offers a definition of noise and presents a brief history of the emergence of noise into various musical genres. He then discusses various aesthetic approaches to the use of noise in music through the work of Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Merzbow and Curd Duca. He also philosophically reflects on the use of noise in music through four concepts: the sublime, the Dionysian, multiplicity, and the abject.
