Gertich discusses sound sculpture from a number of viewpoints. After looking at early examples (the Baschet brothers, Tinguely and Schöffer), the author makes a tripartite distinction: sound as sculpture, sound installation and sound sculpture vs. sculpture about music (or sound). This allows the author to discuss more recent examples, in particular work of Martin Riches, Joe Jones, Trimpin and Stephan von Huene investigating each artist's roots and how they are moving the area forward. Towards the end of the article, Gertich presents means of discussing sound sculpture through the use of particular terms and approaches whilst touching on questions related to aesthetics as well. He concludes his article with a look at what the future may bring.
