In this brief article, the author reflects on the question, “what would you like to see music machines capable of doing?” In answering he concentrates on music processing systems, suggesting three classes of algorithms that operate within this system: 1) digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, 2) signal analysis algorithms, and 3) sound signal analysis, score, and synthesis database management algorithms. There then follows a transcript of a group discussion concerning his thoughts on this issue, in particular his use of neural networks for pitch detection.
