This article presents a brief summary of two classes of algorithms that have been used for music composition: stochastic algorithms and algorithms based on cellular automata. It demonstrates how these two classes of algorithms are used to generate musical data and how these algorithms have been used to develop the CAMUS 3D system, a composition system that likens the process of music composition to that of pattern propagation.
