In this article, the author discusses design objectives for computer music systems serving instructional purposes and outlines topics of research in the interactive behaviour of users of such systems. He places emphasis on the need for analysis of the cognitive processes presupposed by realising behavioural objectives, and for an empirical theory of music interfaces that have been evolved and tested experimentally.
