This article concerns Max - a computer environment for realising live electronic music. The author explores the idea that being presented with a blank screen in Max, one that says implicitly that the user must first create instruments before making music, offers the promise that learning it and figuring out how to create its "documents" can lead to results that are satisfying in a way that using prefabricated software would never be.
