In this brief article, the author discusses research in Artificial Intelligence (AI)-aided sound design that explores the possibility of using the computer as an intelligent assistant for the composer in sound synthesis environments. An intelligent assistant is a system that works co-operatively with the user, providing automated reasoning or possible alternatives for the production of sound. The author believes that developing such a system requires the appropriate coupling between human imagination and AI.
