In this article, the author describes his work, beginning in 1987, that combines computer animation and music within an interactive performance,. He discusses the artistic and technical challenge of this practice as it evolved and developed over time. He also describes the Aura system that he currently uses to create interactive music, animation, and video musical situations by generating sounds and images that encourage improvising performers to make certain musical choices.
