In this chapter, the author notes that in recent years there has been an increasing interest in the use of instruments from other, usually non-western, cultures in electroacoustic music. Many such instruments come from highly developed traditions which may be little understood by the western composer; many performance practices, attitudes and aesthetics may likewise be misunderstood in both directions. The problems and opportunities afforded by technology becomes a major issue. The author addresses this issue through case studies of two works combining eastern and western resources: Pathways (1989) and Points of Return (1998). He examines the complex tensions and interactions in relating two traditions within one composition (from the composer's perspective), and discusses what forms successful acculturation between two highly developed traditions might take.
