In this article, the author argues that some musicians and composers of experimental music appear to have been educated without any regard as to the broader social function of their music. In offering a solution to this situation the author suggests that experimental studios must continue to be isolated places for vanguard, experimental musical research, but they must also maintain their relationship with broader society through an awareness of the relationship between society and its sonic environment.
