In this article, the author relates the music of Frank Zappa to the tradition of the European avant-garde (especially Dada). He examines Zappa's attention to the technical aspect of recording along with his concern to disrupt the conventions of representation, comparing and contrasting him with the likes of Stockhausen, Cage and Boulez.
