For the musician, the computer can be a tool through which to explore new music, create new sounds, and to experiment with new musical structures without necessarily having an in-depth knowledge of computer technology. Through a history of contemporary music, the author discusses some of the fundamental principals of sound, synthesis techniques, computer interfaces, and details their musical applications from the perspective of both the composer and the musicologist.
