In this paper, the authors ask if there is a distinction between new interfaces for musical expression and new interfaces for controlling sound? In addressing this question, they present a brief overview of expression in musical performance, and then examine certain characteristics of 'expressive' computer music instruments. They use their findings to suggest possible directions that computer music instrument designers may take towards developing interfaces that enhance the expressive quality of computer music performances.
