This is the second of two thought provoking articles in this proceedings volume (for the other, see Barthelmes 1999). Müller states initially that he will offer a spontaneous discussion on the subject of whether sound art is a genre. After citing several figures in experimental music, his conclusion is that he would like to conclude that this is the case, but in so many artistic outings at the time, the borders between genres (or categories) are simply too fluid to be specifically demarcated, thus leaving the door open for further debate.
