Surrogacy

Denis Smalley has introduced this term as a means of describing the levels, or degrees, to which listeners perceptually relate sounds to real or imagined physical and gestural sources within an acousmatic listening situation. Surrogacy may describe the recognition of familiar instrumental or vocal production when reproduced in recorded form. As the degree of surrogacy becomes more remote, listeners may ascribe imagined causes to sounds and their spectromorphological evolution, or apprehend the sound as 'abstract'. Smalley terms these varying levels as 'orders of surrogacy'.

Ce terme peut ainsi désigner la reconnaissance de voix ou d'instruments familiers lorsqu'ils sont perçus sous la forme d'enregistrement. À mesure que le degré de surrogacy diminue, les auditeurs peuvent attribuer des causes imaginaires aux sons et à leurs évolutions spectromorphologiques ou appréhender le son d'une manière abstraite. Surrogacy

Denis Smalley introduce questo termine per descrivere i vari livelli, o gradi, con i quali un ascoltatore collega percettivamente un suono a una fonte reale o immaginaria, fisica o gestuale, in una situazione di ascolto acusmatico. La surrogacy può descrivere il riconoscimento di un suono vocale o strumentale quando riprodotto in un supporto registrato. Quando il grado di surrogacy diventa remoto, l'ascoltarore può ascrivere il suono e la sua evoluzione spettromorfologica a cause immaginarie, o comprendere il suono come ‘astratto'. Smalley definisce questi vari livelli come ‘ordini di surrogacy' (orders of surrogacy).
