In this article, the author discusses improvisation in electroacoustic music from musicological, aesthetic, practical and technical design standpoints. He exemplifies his discussion through accounts of his own performance experiences, including examples of software applications that have been developed to support improvisation in electroacoustic music. The article offers an appendix that contains screen shots of Max/MSP patches. The online version of the article offers audio extracts.
