Composers and sound designers are increasingly extending their modes of creative expression to include other media. The widespread availability of user-friendly videoediting software has enabled composers to more easily explore the use of visual images in their work and thus extend their creative practice. In this article, the author examines three recent works by Australian composers Robert Davidson, Carla Thackrah and Christine McCombe, which integrate visual image and text as well as music and sound design. These three works can be regarded as hybrid or intermedia works in which traditional artform boundaries are blurred through the intertwining of music, text, video and performance.
