In this brief paper, the author's point of departure is the difference between traditional acoustic music with its emphasis on pitch relations and electronic music that emphasises tone colour (timbre) relations. Highlighting the highly individual and vivid timbre characteristics of traditional Chinese instruments, he suggests that there may be a timbre-based relationship between compositional approaches using these traditional instruments and electronic music.
