A term that originally designated the instrumental B-side, or “version”, of a reggae single intended as a backing track for a deejay. The term came to be associated with the work of producers such as King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry who, via studio effects, turned these versions into works of art in their own right.

Il termine si riferiva in origine al lato B dei dischi che contenevano la versione strumentale di un brano reggae, utilizzata dai DJ come base. Ora il termine viene associato ai nomi di King Tubby e Lee “Scratch” Perry; essi hanno trasformato queste versioni in brani veri e propri, grazie alla loro abilità di aggiungere nuovi effetti.
