In this article, the author discusses the uses of the computer as a sound processor in both the recording studio and the recording studio dedicated to electroacoustic music. He presents an introduction to several basic sound processing techniques that were being developed in the 1980s. He describes, wavelet analysis using windowing, the means by which the computer can be used to simulate the functions of analogue tape recorders, linear predictive coding, and phase vocoding
