In this article, the author describes his ‘interactive composing' approach. This is a two-stage process involving the creation of a computer-based automaton with its own personality, and then interacting with that automaton, improvisationally and intuitively controlling the shape of the music it produces; he contextualises his discussion through his work, Solo (1978).
