In this paper, the author offers an overview of the field of Interconnected Musical Networks (IMNs): these are live performance systems that allow groups of performers to collaborate in creating dynamic, evolving compositions in real-time. The author discusses the motivations and aesthetics behind the art form, the historical landmarks that have paved the way for developments in the filed, and future prospects. Two examples of INM projects are also presented.
