In this chapter, the author discusses how technological shifts have transformed our sound environment, our concept of hearing, and modified our aesthetic criteria to a point where our aural perception abilities have become impoverished. He suggests that electroacoustic soundscape composers may be the key in helping us to re-discover and better understand the breadth of our acoustic environment, and hence help us in addressing issues relating to the ecology/technology paradigm. He offers a brief overview of a theory of electroacoustic soundscape composition that addresses some of these issues.
