In this article, the author, a Latin American composer, offers a historical and cultural context in which his works may be more adequately assessed - this context is a brief account of the Latin American artistic and musical background of the past 40 years (up to 1989). His feeling is that electroacoustic music created by Latin American composers should not be assessed from the perspective of European concert music traditions, but should be approached with some knowledge of the Latin American cultural traditions in which the composer has developed.
