The emergence of avant-garde radio art in 1960s West Germany had such an impact that throughout the following decade no broadcaster in West Germany, Austria, or German-speaking Switzerland was without its quotient of experimental radio plays. In this chapter, the author presents a history of German radio art. His point of departure is Paul Pörtner's radio work Schallspielstudie (‘Soundplaystudy'), a work that fundamentally changed the way radio drama (Hörspiel) would be created, and one that can be linked to the developing aesthetic of what became termed the New Hörspiel.
