After an introduction to computer and musical systems, the author discusses the various possibilities of using computers in musical applications. From the Illiac Suite to computer systems inherited from MUSIC V, he differentiates between two main activities: composition assisted by computer and digital synthesis of sounds. Various composers and works are also presented to exemplify his discussion.
