The “Experimentalstudio” in Freiburg was, until IRCAM was founded, one of the most important studios internationally for live electronics. The studio’s director during a lengthy tenure, Hans Peter Haller, was of the belief that the best way to work in this field was to develop relevant tools which would subsequently be built by external firms. Amongst other things, he was successful, with help from the SWF, in inviting a number of composers to work in the studio. One of the better known developments, by Peter Lawo in 1971, was the sound spatialiser, the ‘Halophon’. The original version of Boulez’s … explosante fixe … (premiered in New York in 1973) was prepared using this instrument.

Volume 1 of this documentation is focused on the technology of electronic sound synthesis. Volume 2 documents the invited composers and their work during their residences: Cristóbal Halffter, Peter Schat, Pierre Boulez, Kasimir Serocki, Luigi Nono, Dieter Schnebel, etc. Nono realized eleven works there including the well known Prometeo (1984).

Das Experimentalstudio in Freiburg war bis zur Gründung des IRCAM eines der wichtigsten Studios für Live-Elektronik. Der langjährige Leiter des Studios, Hans Peter Haller, verstand es zum einen auf hervorragende Weise, neue Geräte zu konzipieren und diese von externen Firmen bauen zu lassen. Zum anderen gelang es ihm mit Hilfe des Südwestfunks, zahlreiche Komponisten an das Studio zu holen. Sehr bekannt wurde der 1971 zusammen mit Peter Lawo entstandene Raumklangverteiler, das Halaphon. Mittels dieses Raumklangverteilers wurde die erste Version von Boulez' ...explosante fixe... 1973 in New York aufgeführt. Band 1 der Dokumentation hat den Schwerpunkt Technik der Elektronischen Klangerzeugung. Band 2 dokumentiert die eingeladenen Komponisten und ihre dort realisierten Kompositionen: Cristóbal Halffter, Peter Schat, Pierre Boulez, Kasimir Serocki, Luigi Nono, Dieter Schnebel u.a. Allein Nono realisierte am Experimentalstudio 11 Kompositionen, darunter Prometeo (1984).
