In this essay, the author notes that while the market for digital computer-controlled synthesis equipment is exploding, fewer and fewer electroacoustic concert works are emerging. He examines this issue through a discussion concerning the forces that have been affecting the role of electroacoustic music in educational institutions (USA), concert halls and broadcasting media. He examines the dynamics of distribution established through he development of the phonograph, electronic tone generators/modifiers and audio recording tape and looks at the impact that timbre-dominated composition has had on music research.
