Auditory Illusion

In the same vein as the study of paradoxes and ambiguities in visual perception (i.e. optical illusions, for example M C Escher), auditory illusion as an area of research has contributed significantly to our understanding of perceptual and cognitive processes in decoding sonic and musical sensory inputs. With the work of Jean-Claude Risset and R. N. Shepard (creator of Shepard tones), it has also contributed to the development of electroacoustic techniques and means, in particular in the field of sound synthesis. Auditory illusions may frequently be caused by paradoxes in our perception of pitch/frequency and spatial location of sound.

Closely allied is the notion of analysis through synthesis, significant in the development of techniques such as Frequency Modulation synthesis, developed by John Chowning. For recent research in the field refer to the work of Diana Deutsch.

Illusion auditive

Parallèlement à l'étude des paradoxes et des ambiguïtés de la perception visuelle (c'est-à-dire, des illusions optiques, comme par exemple chez M.C. Escher), les recherches sur les illusions auditives ont contribué d'une manière significative à une meilleure compréhension des processus perceptifs et cognitifs du sonore et du musical. Avec les travaux de Jean-Claude Risset et de R.N. Shepard (créateur des sons de Shepard), les illusions auditives ont également permis le développement de techniques et de moyens électroacoustiques, notamment dans le domaine de la synthèse du son. Ces illusions auditives sont fréquemment causées par des paradoxes de notre perception sur la hauteur, la fréquence ou la localisation spatiale du son.

Sullo stesso piano dello studio dei paradossi e delle ambiguità nella percezione visiva (per es. le illusioni ottiche, M.C. Escher), la ricerca sulle illusioni uditive hanno contribuito in maniera significativa a comprendere i processi percettivi e cognitivi di decodificazione degli impulsi sensoriali sonori e musicali. Con i lavori di Jean-Claude Risset e di R.N. Shepard (creatore dei suoni di Shepard), le illusioni uditive hanno permesso lo sviluppo di tecniche e strumenti elettroacustici, soprattutto nel campo della sintesi del suono. Queste illusioni sono causate da paradossi della nostra percezione delle altezze/frequenze o della localizzazione spaziale del suono. Il termine è collegato alla nozione di analisi per sintesi, importante per lo sviluppo di tecniche come la Modulazione di Frequenza sviluppata da John Chowning. Molti lavori recenti sono sviluppati da Diana Deutsch.

Así como el estudio de paradojas y ambigüedades en la percepción visual (es decir, ilusiones ópticas, por ejemplo las de M. C. Escher), las ilusiones auditivas como área de investigación han contribuido de modo significativo a la comprensión de los procesos perceptivos y cognitivos de decodificación de estímulos sensoriales sonoros y musicales. El trabajo de Jean-Claude Risset y R. N. Shepard (creador de los tonos de Shepard), ha contribuido también al desarrollo de las técnicas y los medios electroacústicos, en particular en el campo de la síntesis sonora. Las ilusiones auditivas frecuentemente pueden ser causadas por paradojas en nuestra percepción de la altura/frecuencia y localización espacial del sonido.
