In this article, the author examines recent developments that have offered new possibilities in sound analysis and synthesis. Noting that although they are typically issued from laboratories, these possibilities have reached not only professionals, but also a large public that is now listening to and making technology-based music. He examines the following techniques in some detail: additive synthesis, fast Fourier transform (FFT), natural sound and voice processing, and physical modelling.
