In this article, the author explores the effect that technology has had on experimental music composition, in particular the effect that technology has had on technique - both philosophically and practically. He discusses technology in general, albeit with a particular focus on the role of the computer interface. His overall aim is to articulate an approach to understanding music technology that favours its experimental imperative over its merely productive capability, thereby dispelling the myth of technological determinism.
