In this article, the author contends that analysis should help prepare you to hear a work, to actively perceive the compositional procedures and their results and the wholeness that they construct over time. He notes that it is often illuminating to know what composers themselves want you to hear, to learn from them about some of the parameters that they laboured over that are not immediately apparent. In addressing these ideas, he discusses his work Sequence Symbols (1984) in particular, those aspects of the work that, as the composer, he feels directly contribute to the important heard aspects of the piece.
