In this chapter, the author explores the relationship between music as realised in performance and music as tangible, authoritative text and how this relationship has been impacted, if not defined, by music technologies over the course of roughly one century. The author focuses on the crucial part that the disc jockey (DJ) has played in redefining the role of music technologies, helping to bridge the transition from the analogue to digital era by redefining the turntable and sampler as performance instruments.
