In this article, the author seeks to identify the role of computer environments in support of musical studies in higher education in the UK. He emphasises the need for developing an approach that does not merely train students how to use the equipment, but that includes musical and aesthetic concepts. He also reflects on some of the more pragmatic considerations that should be taken into account when establishing a computer-based music education environment.
