In this paper, the authors consider the nature of creativity and analyses the requirements of composition software in terms of the extent to which such composition systems create conditions in which composers can be creative. The analysis is focussed on a study of the music composition process and a survey of composers’ experiences of, and attitudes towards, existing systems.
