In this chapter, the authors discuss the basic requirements of interactive music systems that are based on artificial intelligence (AI). The focus is on the integration of multiple representational levels and reasoning mechanisms, the grounding of such systems in the musical signals environment, the importance of metaphors and analogies, and requirements related to real-time processing. An experimental AI-system (HARP) is presented. Its integration with musical signals is discussed and examples of concrete applications are given.
