In this brief article, the author reflects on the question, “what would you like to see music machines capable of doing?” In answering, he criticises the extent to which the compositional dreams of the technology-based composer are limited by the available technology, in that the dream machine he requires to fulfil a particular compositional dream may not in fact exist, and so inhibiting the process of turning the inner ear into outer music. There then follows a transcription of a group discussion concerning his thoughts on this issue.
