In this paper, the author discusses a range of works that feature interplay between different levels of sonic ‘reality' and ‘abstraction'. He explores how the presence of this reality-abstraction continuum offers a useful level of structural interpretation in electroacoustic music, as it functions through one of the most fundamental of normal listening modes - source-cause recognition.
