In this article, the author discusses some of the problems that were inherent in computer music during the early years of its development. Noting that most computer music research and development takes place in research centres and university laboratories utilizing complex and expensive systems, he argues that, whilst this research must continue, what is also required is the development of affordable, user friendly systems for the real-world musician, systems that that have enough capabilities to intrigue musicians and produce sound that are satisfying, whilst costing as little as is possible.
