In this article the authors present the results of research into the use of computers to analyse sounds, they are particularly interested in the potential for using analysis to discover what makes the sound of a traditional acoustic musical instrument inherently interesting to the human ear. In this article they focus on analysis of a trumpet tone followed by a discussion on how to reduce the huge amount of data obtained by such analysis without losing fidelity in the process.
