In this brief article, the author reflects on the question, “what would you like to see music machines capable of doing?” In answering he offers two responses: 1) the need for the development of gestural controllers that map hand trajectories in three dimensional space, allowing for a performer to mould entire scores with hand motions similar to the way in which a conductor works, but also altering the entire aural/spatial field, the trajectories of the sounds in the music; and 2) an intelligent system that could observe a composer's compositional practice and automatically determine and supply the appropriate tools to use without explicitly being told to do so. There then follows a transcript of a group discussion concerning his thoughts, in particular, his notion that measuring audience responses in order to gather reaction feedback may offer useful information to the composer.
