Un plug-in es una herramienta de software para la manipulación sonora o de datos MIDI. Puede ser utilizado como una forma de procesamiento digital de señales (DSP) destructiva, o como un insert (software añadido) en un entorno de mezcla virtual. Por otra parte, a partir del desarrollo de instrumentos musicales virtuales, aparecieron plug-ins que pemiten insertar a ese tipo de instrumentos en las pistas (tracks) de una mezcla.
