In this paper, the authors describe the real world challenges faced when designing and realising interactive, electronic sound works that are physically situated in public spaces. They exemplify their discussion through a case study that is based on their public installation piece Transition Soundings, installed in the city of Tempe, Arizona (USA) from 2005-2006.
