In this article, the author proposes the establishing of soundscape studies - a discipline concerning the relationship between human beings and their sonic environment. He argues that separating musical study from ecological concerns of the acoustic environment (acoustic ecology) is no longer tenable as environmental noise negatively influences the psychological listening ability of musicians and audiences, therefore we should focus on establishing a balanced relationship between individuals, communities and their sonic environment, and investigate how acoustic design may assist in achieving this balance.
